Ed Ryan
Ed Ryan is a native of Nashville,
Tennessee, and is a 1995 graduate of the Nashville School of Law,
is a member of the law firm of May & Ryan, PLC.
Ed started his career in the criminal
justice system as a Nashville Metro Police officer. Ed worked
as a police officer for 16 years. During his tenor he started
in patrol, and then spent 10 years as a dog handler. After being
promoted to sergeant he supervised the legal section of the police
department and taught law to police recruits and also in-service
training to the experienced officers.
In 1997, Ed went to work for the
Davidson County District Attorneys office. While at the District
Attorney's office Ed was the lead prosecutor for all Driving Under
the Influence charges including vehicular homicide and vehicular
assault. While in the District Attorneys office he, worked with
other prosecutors concerning legislation and training other DA's
in DUI prosecution.
In 1999, Ed went into private practice
with and emphasis in criminal defense. Now approximately 95% of
his practice is DUI defense. Ed is a member of TACDL (Tennessee
Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers) NACDL (National Association
of Criminal Defense Lawyers), the National College of DUI Defense,
the Nashville Bar association and the Tennessee Bar Association.
Ed lectures to members of the local and State bar associations
on DUI defense. He also continues to teach the recruits at the
Tennessee Highway Patrol Academy.
In October 2001, Ed was appointed
as the referee in the Environmental Court for Nashville to rule
on all violations of the city ordinances in Nashville. This is
a part time judicial position that concerns the overseeing of
cases involving, code issues and all violations of Metro code
(ordinances in Davidson County).
