• Spent 6½ years on active duty with the United States Army and 21½ years in the Reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel, Infantry, in the United States Army Reserve in June of 2000
• While in the reserves, and as adjunct faculty, regularly taught Military Justice and military criminal procedure to ROTC cadets before their commissioning as lieutenants in the United States Army
